New Report Adds to Evidence Vitamin E Oil at Fault in Vaping Illnesses

A new report found lung samples from 48 out of 51 vaping patients contained oil associated with the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its strongest evidence to date that vitamin E acetate is the major culprit in more than 2,500 serious lung illnesses tied to vaping over the past several months.

Researchers found vitamin E acetate in 48 out of 51 lung-fluid samples from patients with vaping-related ailments, according to the new report, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Friday. By contrast, lung-fluid samples from 99 healthy people, including 18 nicotine e-cigarette users and 29 cigarette smokers, didn’t contain any vitamin E acetate.

“The explosive outbreak can be attributed to exposure to THC vaping products that also contain vitamin E acetate,” said Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC. “This is a really important paper.”"
