Women dentists earn only 74 cents for each dollar earned by male dentists

That comes the book The Economics of Public Issues, 19e, page 94. They raise the issue of how discrimination could be taking place. After all, dentists are mostly self-employed and set their own rates. How could the female dentists earn so much less then? Are they not charging enough? Also, what patient would go to a male dentist when they can get a 26% discount by going to a female dentist? Is the demand that much greater for male dentists? If so, are customers doing the discriminating?

It is hard to imagine that their is discrimination going on here. So the difference is probably due to experience and hours worked. This is probably the case for many other jobs as well.
