On labor union myths
From Gene Epstein.
"On labor union myths, try economist Stanley Lebergott's "THE AMERICANS: An Economic Record." He notes: "Before 1933, unions got almost no support from American workers" (p.385) & also notes that workweek hours had "fallen markedly from 58.5 in 1900 to 48.7 in 1929." (p. 383)
Ironically, Lebergott also observes: "A notable exception to the trend was...the iron & steel industry, w/its 12-hour workday.... The Amalgamated Association of Iron & Steel Workers...feared the decline in income that a shorter workday would mean." (p. 383)"
