Freedom is the source of scientific and industrial progress

See From Don Boudreaux.
"From page 24 of the late Ralph Raico’s April 1961 essay ”Wilhelm von Humboldt” (available on-line, free, here) as it appears in Liberty Fund’s 1981 single-volume collection of the New Individualist Review:

Few will doubt that scientific progress would have been appallingly retarded if, for instance, Einstein had been compelled to obtain permission from a board in charge of “planning science” before he could undertake his researches (or if a government commission had been empowered to pass on Galileo’s intended work!). But if men like Henry Ford had not been free to put their ideas into operation, industrial progress would have been no less stanched."
